The Physiotherapist

Melanie Power MCSP

Melanie Power is an HCPC Registered, Chartered Physiotherapist who graduated from Coventry University with a BSc (Hons) in Physiotherapy in 2007, having completed clinical placements in a range of settings within the NHS including musculoskeletal outpatients (peripheral and spinal), a lower limb unit, amputee rehabilitation, neurological rehab, elderly care rehab and thoracic surgery.

Since 2007, Melanie has split her working time between a private physiotherapy clinic in North London (predominantly domiciliary/community work) and Power Physiotherapy (initially both outpatients and community, in recent years mainly the latter), in addition to holding a bank physiotherapist post at Chase Farm Hospital.

Melanie has also been a member of the official medical team for the London Marathon since 2009. Other post-graduate work includes working at the 2007 UK School Games providing physiotherapy for the Great Britain regional judo and volleyball teams (under-19s), and working on a voluntary basis for charities including the Brain and Spine Foundation and the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign providing physio and first aid support at fundraising sports events such as the Bupa London 10k and the Asics British 10k London runs.

One of Melanie's other main interests is Martial Arts. Having started training in 1993, she earned her 3rd dan black belt in Shotokan Karate in 2016 and has been a qualified instructor since 2001. She also trained in Muay Thai whilst at university and has enjoyed cross training in other martial arts such as Jeet Kune Do and Kali/Escrima.

As an instructor, Melanie's main areas of expertise include injury prevention (especially in long term training), precise movement analysis and how to generate the maximum force possible, whatever the student's size or strength, whilst minimizing the potential of injury to themself whilst doing so. She also has an interest in the analysis of kyusho jutsu ("pressure point" fighting) techniques in anatomical and medical terms in order to analyse the risks involved, with a view to teaching these only in a safe and responsible manner - she strongly opposes the opinion of certain kyusho exponents that "It doesn't matter why it works, only that it does".

Continued Professional Development (CPD)

The Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC, the independent UK regulatory body, formerly HPC) standards state all health professionals must continue to develop their knowledge and skills - it is a legal requirement in order to continue to practice.

The HCPC defines CPD as ‘a range of learning activities through which health professionals maintain and develop throughout their career to ensure that they retain their capacity to practice safely, effectively and legally within their evolving scope of practice’.

Melanie regularly undertakes CPD activities, including: attending evening lectures, participating in in-service training, attending courses, reading and reviewing journal articles, reflective writing and working with senior and specialist physiotherapists. For further details of CPD undertaken, please visit the CPD section.
